Chapter 3
The Primaries

The last state finished its primary in late June of the election year. At the end, Pepper found out that she and Ronnie had won the primary elections in sixteen states, earning them the states’ delegates. Mary won in seventeen states, and Vince won the rest. At first glance, Vince seemed to have won the party’s primary elections because he had won the most number of states.

However, because Pepper and Ronnie won primary elections in the larger states that had many voters, they ended up winning the highest number of party delegates. Their supporters celebrated their candidate’s victory with a huge fanfare. Pepper and Ronnie assigned the delegate seats to many of their most loyal and hard working supporters.
